SENIOR CITIZENS: Ensuring Better Care and Support.

Our seniors, who have spent a lifetime serving Bermuda, have urgent needs. Too many of them are struggling to live their lives with dignity, when adequate housing, healthcare and security are so hard to obtain. We must do a better job serving them.

The United Bermuda Party has developed a comprehensive plan to provide today’s seniors with an acceptable quality of life and to meet the future demands of Bermuda’s growing elderly population.

The next United Bermuda Party government will act decisively to plug the gaps in healthcare coverage, provide safe, affordable housing, improve pension benefits and secure better human rights for seniors. We will:

  • Provide basic health care for every senior in need.
  • Provide free prescription drugs and eyeglasses for seniors in need.
  • Plug the gaps in healthcare coverage for seniors by aggressively pursuing insurance reform.
  • Work with the private sector to develop new health-related insurance products for seniors, including a medical pension scheme.
  • Explore ideas for improving catastrophic healthcare coverage.
  • Implement automatic annual contributorypension increases, tied to the cost of living.
  • Address the current gaps in healthcare for seniors by aggressively pursuing healthcare and insurance reform.
  • Explore the feasibility of enhancements to healthcare coverage, including a medical pension plan, increased use of generic drugs and further benefits in HIP.
  • Support the development of affordable assisted-living facilities, which provide a continuum of support and medical care for seniors.
  • Implement without delay the recommendations for higher standards of care in home healthcare, rehabilitation centres and rest homes.
  • Act to prohibit age discrimination in our human rights legislation.
  • Work with the banking community to initiate a scheme of reverse mortgages.
  • Create an office for a Seniors Advocate that provides efficient and daily support.
  • Launch a Housing-at-Home programme to encourage families to provide housing at home for parents and grandparents.
